    Honeydew: When did you open? What would you say was your biggest key to success?

     Michelle: We started selling online in 2004 and opened our retail store in 2007; I think the biggest key to our success is staying true to our style in spite of the trends. One of our key philosophies is to provide beautiful and unique styles that are affordable for every day, and to always have a great selection of standout pieces for those times when you want something glamorous for a special occasion!

     Honeydew: When did you know that owning your own intimates boutique was your calling?

     Michelle: I never set out to one day own a lingerie boutique; it just kind of evolved! After years of performing on stage, I owned an abundance of costumes and vintage, and started selling them on eBay just to make room in the closet! From there it mushroomed into a full time online business with a special knack for sourcing and selling rare vintage dead-stock lingerie. When we opened our store in 2007 we expanded our product range to include new items and classic foundations. We still offer stunning authentic vintage in pristine condition.

     Honeydew: What is the overall ‘vibe’ in your shop?

     Michelle: Feminine, with homage to the classic glamour of the 1920s through the 1950s!

     Honeydew: What was the first moment you realized “Hey, I’m actually making this work!”

     Michelle: Opening the shop in 2007 was tough, not knowing that the country was already in a recession! But we won a Best of the Bay award in spring of 2008, and knew that we had hit on something unique that couldn’t be found elsewhere.

     Honeydew: What is your target customer & price-point?

     Michelle: Our customers range in age from 18 to 55, and are from all over the world. Haight-Ashbury is a travel destination in and of itself, so we see people from across the globe. Our price points range from moderate to high end so there is always something available, even for a young woman on a budget!

     Honeydew: Small business owners often get a lot of feedback from their regular customers. What do your customers love about your store? What do your customers love about Honeydew

    Intimates specifically?

     Michelle: We have a regular customer from Spain who travels to San Francisco every year. The last time she was in our store she said, “This is my favorite shop in the whole world.” That was amazing! Customers tell us they love the warm, welcoming environment, that it’s relaxed and makes them feel feminine just being there! Hands down customers love Honeydew fabrics! It’s hard not to be amazed and comment at how soft and luxurious they are. Once a customer touches it they are in love.

     Honeydew: What is your personal favorite Honeydew Intimates item & why?

     Michelle: The Enchanting Romper in Mojave, it’s such a fresh color and has amazing comfort. Once you put it on you don’t want to take it off! But I would have to say it’s a tie with the Scarlette panty in Anchor Blue - so sexy!! (check them out below!!)

    Honeydew: When did you open? What would you say was your biggest key to success?

    Tami: Arcella’s opened in December 2007 right before everything in the economy took a tumble.  Being adaptable, listening to our customers, and always trying to do what is right for them has made us successful in our small community.

    Honeydew: When did you know that owning your own intimates boutique was your calling? 

    Tami: Arcella’s is named after my Grandmother, Arcella Richard and actually started as a “Relaxation Boutique” with bath and body products, heat wraps, candles etc.!  We were carrying some pajamas, slippers and nightgowns and customers were requesting lingerie.  I knew nothing about lingerie!  I slowly started adding lingerie to the mix and when the lingerie category was outselling our bath category I knew that was the direction we needed to go.

    Honeydew:  What is the overall ‘vibe’ in your shop?

    Tami: Because we started as a “Relaxation Boutique”  the vibe at Arcella’s is relaxing.  I try to make the shop appeal to all of the senses from the music playing in the background to the wonderful smell of our soaps and candles and the super soft lingerie from Honeydew!   It is a comfortable and sensual experience.

    Honeydew: What was the first moment you realized “Hey, I’m actually making this work! 

    Tami: We first realized we were making the business work when we were getting multiple referrals from our customers.  Nothing speaks more than unsolicited referrals!  We are so grateful for all our customers!

    Honeydew: What is your target customer & price-point? 

     Tami: Our target customers are women age 25-65.  We carry some less expensive lines, but are mid range for most of our products. We also get higher end statement pieces from time to time.

    Honeydew: Small business owners often get a lot of feedback from their regular customers.  What do your customers love about your store? What do your customers love about Honeydew Intimates specifically?

     Tami: Our customers most often tell us that the store smells so GOOD! I also hear that they like our selection, prices and that we are known for our great customer service.  The women in our area are very active and they love Honeydew because it is so soft and comfortable yet cute and feminine at the same time.

    Honeydew: What is your personal favorite Honeydew Intimates item & why?

     Tami: My personal favorite is the rayon & lace chemise.  They are all so soft, wearable and feminine!

     Honeydew:  Anything you’d like to tell Honeydew fans out there about yourself, your store, or just life itself?

    Tami: Since our business has evolved from a relaxation boutique to an intimates boutique, people often ask me how my Grandmother feels about having a lingerie store named after her…so I asked her… she busted out laughing - saying ” I’m not that old fashioned”!  Honeydew has been a very important part of our business, I am guessing one that my grandmother would have liked when she was a bit younger! We are thrilled to be representing the line in Glenwood Springs, CO.

    This week we’re featuring Bloomers, a sweet boutique with two locations in both Arlington & Alexandria, Virginia!  Owner Kim took a moment to fill us in on how Bloomers, well…bloomed, into a flourishing flirtatious shop where you can pick up Honeydew, along with a ridiculously cute travel case for your bras!!

    Honeydew: When did you open? What would you say was your biggest key to success?

    Kim: November 2008.  Our key to success is offering a good product selection across multiple price points.


    Honeydew: When did you know that owning your own intimates boutique was your calling?

    Kim: About 8 years ago when I saw another similar decide to close up shop and I thought how I would do it differently based on a trip to Colorado to a similar store.

    Honeydew:  What is the overall ‘vibe’ in your shop? 

    Kim: Fun, friendly, cute, easy going.

    Honeydew: What was the first moment you realized “Hey, I’m actually making this work!” 

    Kim: After we made it through the first year when the recession began and was at its worst.

    Honeydew: What is your target customer & price-point? 

    Kim: Our target customer is women 30-up who simply want to go to a cute, comfortable place to get their basic underpinnings.  We are NOT a lingerie store.  We specialize in your basics but pretty and accessible.  We don’t have a target price point, but we do try to seek out items whereby the price point is accessible and competitive. 

    Honeydew: Small business owners often get a lot of feedback from their regular customers.  What do your customers love about your store? What do your customers love about Honeydew Intimates specifically? 

    Kim: Our customers lover our concept and love how easy going and available our products are.  Customers love Honeydew because they are cute, fun and a great price point!

    Honeydew: What is your personal favorite Honeydew Intimates item & why?

    Kim: I love the 436 undies in all the various colors!
