Happy Friday, Dewettes!! Our ‘Boutique-of-the-Week’ is the cleverly-named shop, Freudian Slip, located in beautiful Eugene, Oregon! Check out what owner Lisa Lindquist has to say about Honeydew, mannequins, and her strong supportive community!
Honeydew: When did you open? What would you say was your biggest key to success?
Lisa: Freudian Slip opened in October of 2004, so next month we’ll be celebrating our 8th anniversary! I think one of the keys to success is empathy. We have customers of different sizes and shapes, who are at different stages in life and have different special occasions throughout the year. Our customers are shopping for honeymoons, anniversaries, vacations and date nights, as well as basic but pretty bras for wearing every day. This means a different selection for every customer, even though what they are looking for is lingerie that is beautiful, functional and flattering!
Honeydew: When did you know that owning your own intimates boutique was your calling?
Lisa: I’ve loved lingerie for as long as I can remember, and my interest in fashion predates my memories: my mom says I wanted to start ballet lessons at age three because I wanted a tutu! Many years later, after working in various positions in sales, customer service, advertising and communications, I realized I was ready to start my own business. My education and prior career experiences were critical to my success, but there was – and still is – always more to learn.
Honeydew: What was the first moment you realized “Hey, I’m actually making this work!”
Lisa: It was a couple years after opening that I realized I was making it work. You take this incredible leap, opening a business. Hopefully, you’ve done a good job with your research and planning, but you just don’t know how things are going to work out. It’s terrifying and exhilarating to go for it, and hope your community will support your dream.
Honeydew: What is your target customer & price-point?
Lisa: We carry a range of designers and price points to appeal to women who love beautiful lingerie and loungewear, whether they’re 17 or 71.
Honeydew: Small business owners often get a lot of feedback from their regular customers. What do your customers love about your store? What do your customers love about Honeydew Intimates specifically?
Lisa: Our customers shop with us for our selection and customer service. We have many Honeydew fans who love Honeydew for the cute styles and fabulous color combinations!
Honeydew: What is your personal favorite Honeydew Intimates item & why?
Lisa: Currently, my favorite Honeydew collection is Emma Elegance. All of the pieces are fantastic: the bralette, chemise and boyshort. The lace is so soft, the styles are flattering and the color combinations are lovely!
Honeydew: Anything you’d like to tell Honeydew fans out there about yourself, your store, or just life itself?
Lisa: There’s a motto we like: don’t postpone joy. Whether that means buying pretty Honeydew lingerie, or applying to grad school, opening your own business or something entirely different, we hope it means you’re being inspired, working hard and celebrating your successes!
Honeydew: That is a GREAT motto to live by, Lisa! Many boutiques who’ve made their way into the hearts of their local communities have special events or traditions that are really indicative of their locale & community. Do you have any unique traditions at Freudian Slip?
Lisa: One fun thing we do on Facebook is to feature our mannequin Brigitte out and about wearing different lingerie. Each month she appears in something and some place new, and our Facebook fans can win a gift card by identifying where she is and what she’s wearing. She was in Honeydew last summer in the photo attached, and we think we’ll see her in Honeydew again this fall!
Honeydew: We love this - we have our own mannequin here too, her name is Susie!! We dress her in a favorite new piece every upcoming season, which just so happens to be your favorite Emma Elegance chemise, Lisa! We congratulate you on your success and your ability to fulfill your own motto; “don’t postpone joy”.
